Limousine Number Plates

Some limousine hire companies will take great care with their number plates and use these number and letter combinations to help them distinguish their limousines from others on the road, and to keep track of the individual limousines in their fleets. However, some limo hire companies will also try to make sure their limo’s number plates fit with the image of the limousine itself, and with their limo hire company’s corporate image.

Unfortunately, this can often mean using non-regulation plates; but what are the regulations for limousine number plates? In the Road Vehicles 2001 Act, which includes the Motor Car Act of 1903, there are regulations for the sizes, spacings, letters, numbers and position of the number plates for all vehicles and limousines are taken into these regulations.

There was a dispensation granted on 31 July 2001 when the then Minister for Transport made allowances for certain vehicles which had been imported from the US. These vehicles had smaller areas for the number plates to be displayed, and both the plates on the front and the rear of the vehicle had to be 300 mm x 150 mm. The letters and numbers on the plates were allowed to be 64 mm high instead of the previous regulation 79 mm and the spacings were defined in the sizes for motor cycles.

However, it is important to look for all amendments and dispensations when researching the regulations for the number plates of the limousines in your fleet as the Act tends to be published without the 2001 amendment, and without any of its other changes. Therefore, when researching changes or additions to your limousines’ operations, just because you saw it on the internet does not give you the right to be ignorant of an incomplete law.
