Limousine Alcohol Laws
When you are enjoying a drink from a limo bar during a luxury limousine ride on your way to a party, a restaurant or on your way home from the airport after a long trip, you don’t normally consider that you have actually bought the drink you are drinking. However, while you have not bought a drink in the same way you would have were you at a bar in a club, you can be seen as having bought the limo hire, bought the use of the limousine for your hire time, and as such, bought the right to have a few drinks in that limousine.
This is why limousine liquor licensing laws can become an issue, as in most areas, you do not need a liquor license unless you are actually selling alcohol to your passengers. While the chauffeur is not going to pull over and extract a change purse every time you want a drink, limo passengers do not generally pay for the drinks they enjoy from the limo bar.
However, as we all know, there is no such thing as a free lunch, or a free drink. While passengers aren’t physically paying for their drinks, they have still paid for the limo hire. Even when a wedding limousine throws in a free bottle of champagne for the happy couple, they are still paying for the limo hire, and wouldn’t get the champagne without the limo ride.
So while the passengers are not actually buying the alcohol, it is still being served in the limousine, with the chauffeur who needs to be on the ball and alert to maintain control of their limousine. In some areas, there are laws banning alcohol from being in an open bottle while a vehicle is in motion, and some also state that not even passengers can drink alcohol while their vehicle is in motion.
This is often why some limo hire companies will allow you to enjoy the limo bar in limousines with a divider between the chauffeur and the passengers, however, for the safety and the reputation of the limousine hire company, they may have obtained a liquor license just to be sure.
